The PE Department at HMP Birmingham aim to make a major contribution to the regimes of the prison by providing professional, purposeful and constructive physical education opportunities for prisoners and give opportunities for personal development. This will prepare prisoners for reintegration into the community, improve their health and fitness and contribute towards developing the employability of prisoners upon release.
The gym is well used by prisoners and staff for accredited training, recreational fitness and well being events.
The department has promoted charitable events involving both prisoners and staff to raise money for worthwhile causes.
The Sports Centre remains open for 365 days of the year. On weekdays, the first session starts at 0730hrs with the last session leaving at 1905hrs. At weekends and Bank Holidays the timetable runs from 0800hrs until 1630hrs. The Gym has a capacity of 75 prisoners at any one time; a team of qualified Physical Education Officers supervise and instruct the prisoners throughout their sessions.
Full time education based courses are delivered to learners for 50 weeks of the year during the core day Monday to Friday. We have assistance from the Education Department to integrate functional skills for Maths and English into the programme.

There are two weight training areas and one Cardio-vascular fitness room
Remedial PE is available to prisoners with healthcare needs on a GP referral; sessions are available for prisoners on the IDTS Programme. Staff well being is also catered for with advice on fitness and healthy living.
There are no outdoor facilities available.
Accreditations and Qualifications
We are able to offer a wide range of accredited qualifications including:
- Active I.Q Level 1, Developing a healthy and active lifestyles.
- Entry 3 level course in Basic Health and Fitness with active I.Q
- First aid at work
- O.C.N Level one sporting activity relating to football
- Personal Development Through Sport
- Functional skills in Numeracy and English.
- Manual lifting and Handling
- Heart start and Emergency Aid.
First Aid and manual handling is delivered to both staff and prisoners
The PE department also delivers recreational PE activities during the core day, evening and weekends to all prisoners.
